Red Shirts
Red Shirt Program Overview Fall 2020
History
The Red Shirt program was initially established for Sand Tots students with age-eligibility to enroll in the public elementary setting. In response to family wishes, this program now welcomes all students enrolled in 4/5s classes who are ready for the experience.
What is it?
Beginning in the fall, we are offering Red Shirts as a stand alone program to all of our 4/5s students who wish to enroll. As in the past, the program will consist of kinder readiness curriculum, delivered by our Red Shirts teachers in a developmentally appropriate and supportive way.
Structure
- Red Shirt students will have the opportunity to meet in-person on campus once a week for 2 1⁄2 hours. During that time students will receive small-group instruction for approximately 90 minutes followed by 1 hour of play.
- In-person pods are limited to a maximum of 5 children.
- Live, virtual group meetings will also occur twice a week for thirty (30) minutes.
- Self-paced content will be available Monday through Friday.
- Families not wishing to come to campus will have the option of an additional 30 minute distance meeting for a reduced price.
Curriculum
- Zoo-phonics is a multi-sensory program that teaches the letter sounds with engaging animal characters, music, and body signals.
- Handwriting Without Tears is a developmental handwriting program that eases students into writing with appropriate tools and techniques.
- Live phonics instruction will guide students to attend to sounds. Interactive charts will introduce students to the structure of written language and sight words. Students engage in regular free writing with support at their developmental level. An emphasis will be placed on stroke order, spacing, inventive spelling, and punctuation.
- Math instruction includes numerals 1-30 with exposure to the 100s chart, base ten, early addition and subtraction, shapes, patterns, graphing, measurement, and calendar. Students practice group listening by attending to stories with and without illustrations and taking turns leading group readings of charts.
- Read Aloud are selected to support social-emotional learning and content exposure. We will read the first ten books in The Magic Treehouse series.
Materials
Math manipulatives and writing supplies will be provided. Supplemental materials may be furnished periodically. Families will supply a few basic materials (i.e., crayons, scissors, glue). Some supplemental digital materials may be included for families to print at home if they wish.
